Newsletter for Careerforce Enrolled Apprentices                                       December 2024

Kia ora

As 2024 draws to a close, we thank you for continuing to push on with your apprenticeship programme over the year. We sincerely hope you get an opportunity over the holiday season to relax, recharge and reconnect with the people who are important to you. We also recognise that some of you, as essential workers, will continue working over the Christmas and New Years period.

Below we've shared a few things to help you reflect on the year, and some of the things to think about for next year.

Please note that Careerforce offices will be closed over the holiday period, closing at midday on Tuesday 24 December, and will re-open on Monday 6 January 2025.

Meri Kirihimete and we’ll be back in touch in 2025!

Finish the year strong
As the year comes to a close, it's a great time to reflect on the past twelve months. Take a moment to acknowledge your achievements in your programme. If you're looking to make progress on your training over the holidays, here are some ideas to help you stay on track.

Review how you’re doing

At the start of your learning journey, you would have been given a training plan. Do you know how are you tracking? Remember that you can see which unit standards you have completed, and which are yet to be completed on Aka Toi.

Continue with your learning
You can still continue with your learning over the holiday break if you wish. Our online learning platform Aka Toi is also available over the holiday period.

IMPORTANT - only submit one task at a time
Please remember, when completing your apprenticeship assessments, it is important that you ONLY submit ONE task within a module for marking at a time. Feel free to work on other tasks, but please don’t submit these until the first task has been assessed. This is because we need to give you feedback to help guide you, before you move forward to the next one.

Need support with your training?
One way to keep motivated with your learning is to check out the many supports available on the Careerforce website.

The training support section of the website gives advice to help you stay engaged and motivated throughout.
The Learning to Learn
resources have been developed to support you in your learning and study.

Plan for the year ahead
One of the benefits of on-the-job training is that you can progress at your own pace. You know best what you can achieve within your own schedule. Develop a plan for 2025 and set some targets about what you want to accomplish.

Youth Camp attended at 16 sparks future career

Youth Work Graduate Claudia Fraser
At 16, Claudia Fraser attended a Blue Light Youth Camp which has had a profound impact on her future career path.

Blue Light is a charity organisation which delivers a range of programmes with the aim of helping the Police to achieve its youth and community objectives.

While on this camp, Claudia was paired with a Youth Work Mentor, “She really inspired me to get out of my comfort zone and showed me that I had more capability than I thought,” syas Claudia.

Seven years later, Claudia found herself working for Blue Light as a Youth Work Mentor herself, where she gained her New Zealand Apprenticeship in Youth Work.

Since completing her qualification, Claudia has moved into a Section Commander role within the Youth Development Unit (North) in the New Zealand Defence Force. In this role, she facilitates lessons and mentors the 18-24 year olds, coordinating a mixture of activities to get them out of their comfort zone and helping them to gain life skills.

Claudia is now investigating further study options and says, “I would definitely recommend Careerforce work based training programmes. They provide such a great foundation if you are starting a Youth Work job and you need a bit of knowledge behind you”.
